Every so often, I make an attempt to read the whole of Varney The Vampire. I generally stall out round about the end of the first volume, and I think that I might end up doing the same thing again soon (both attempt and fail).One thing I can say from my half experience with it is that I'm always delighted with the first chapter. It's completely lurid and overblown, but good heavens, it's fun.
Hi- Keep plugging away at Varney! The last 1/3 is a blast! I wrote the new Critical edition of Varney published by Zittaw Press- I include a "reader's guide" in the book, it may ease your journey through the middle chapters (which are L-O-N-G)...along w/ a pretty hefty introduction about Penny Dreadfuls and Varney- The book is worth the read...
